Virgin Media Completes 50 Mb Network Upgrade, Launches New Price Structures
Virgin Media today kicked off celebrations for the completion of its network upgrade to 50Mb. The next generation network upgrade took a total of 18 months to execute and deliver, and has managed to triple Virgin Media’s network capacity by being able to provide 50Mb speed to over 12 million homes in the UK.
To celebrate the launch, Virgin has announced a special price for the 50Mb service. The mega fast optic broadband service comes at a subscription price of just ₤28 for subscribers taking it along with a telephone line, and ₤38 for those opting for a stand-alone broadband connection, effective from 1 September 2009. This offer is valid for both new and existing customers.
Along with the service, Virgin Media also announced the launch of its first branded netbook called “Freedom”. The laptop is available in black and red and is optimized for 50Mb speeds. Carrying pre-installed software, the free laptop is available for subscribers who opt for any one of the Virgin Media’s dedicated bundled packages.
Among its upcoming projects, Virgin announced pilot trials for a range of upload speeds up to 10 Mb. The service provider says this is to keep up with its promise of a congestion-free network for its subscribers. Some of the key applications being tested are those relating to video conferencing, multiplayer online gaming and home-office work.
