Short Breaks in Scotland Are an Ideal Retreat from City Life
With more than 200 festivals through the year and the pricey euro making travel abroad expensive, there’s never been a better time to visit Scotland. And there’s a huge range of holidays on offer, from dreamy seaside cottages to coach tours and cruises. We track down some cool short breaks in scotland
EDINBURGH HIGHLAND GAMES
Take the whole family to see Scotland’s largest-ever Highland Games at Gathering in Edinburgh this month (July 25 and 26).
It’s one of the main events in this year’s Homecoming Scotland festival. Clan members from around the world have been invited to join in the event.
There’ll be loads of fun for kids, from a mobile climbing tower and mini Games, to races, storytelling, and Scotland’s largest walkover jigsaw map.
Children can also meet the famous storybook character, Hamish McHaggis, who is the children’s mascot of The Gathering.
Later in the summer families can take part in the Mardi Gras parade in the Grassmarket, part of the Edinburgh International Jazz and Blues Festival (July 21 to August 9).
Loch Ness
Pipes and fiddles will be ringing through the glens for the Caledonian Canal Ceilidh Trail around Loch Ness this summer (July 13 to August 7).
Join in foot stomping dances and songs at concerts held afternoons and evenings around the loch.
Most events are free. Stay at the award-winning Loch Ness Lodge.
The seven room hotel and spa run by Scott and Iona Sutherland has recently been named AA Guest Accommodation of the Year or Scotland.
