Each state has different laws and requirements when it comes to auto insurance. New York State is no exception. If you are a new residence, or considering moving, here is some information and requirements of New York Auto insurance.
• The liability requirements in New York State are:
1. $25,000/$50,000 for injury
2. $50,000/$100,000 for death
3. $10,000 for property damage caused by any one accident
New York Sate is a no-fault state, and the coverage must be maintained even if you are not utilizing the vehicle
• If the vehicle is registered in New York State, it must be insured by a company approved and licensed to do business within the state
• The coverage must be issued to the name on the car’s registration, and must remain in that person’s name at all times. If the name changes, it can cause a lapse of insurance thus leading to driver’s license and car registration suspension
• An insurance identification card is required during the registration process.
• You must receive two original insurance cards from the agent or broker. Both cards must have the name of the registrant and a barcode
• The insurance company is required to file an electronic notice of liability coverage with the DMV. An agent or broker can’t perform this task
• One card goes to the DMV, and the other must be carried in the vehicle at all times
• If you don’t have liability insurance, and you don’t surrender your plates, the DMV will suspend your driver’s license and registration indefinitely.
